Production / Manufacturing

The production module is meant for companies that sell assembled or bundled products.
A good example is a bike builder that sells self made bicycles.
A bike consists of a set of discrete parts that the builder purchases and
assembles into a bike.

Assemblies

Use assemblies to specify the parts that a product consists of.
An assembly is basically a blueprint/definition of a product.
You can then use a work order to create stock items based on these definitions.

Go to: 'Products > Assembly' and click on 'New Record'.

Example of an Assembly

A bike consists of the following parts:
frame, handle, wheels, saddle, chain drive, baggage rack, front splash guard, back splash guard,
front light, brakes, and bell.
A bike builder purchases these separate parts and assembles bikes from them.

In this example, the wheels and frame are themselves composed of subparts.
A wheel consists of an: inner tire, outer tire, and wheel frame.
A product can thus be an assembly of subassemblies.
This gives production companies a lot of flexibility in assembling products.

You also need to specify a tear down value percentage when you register the parts.
This is important when you tear down/disassemble the product for parts.
The tear down feature is discussed in a later section.

Work order

Use a work order to create stock based on assembly definitions.
The needed parts are automatically subtracted from your inventory.

Go to: 'Products > Assembly' and click on 'New Record'.

Example Work Order

Specify the assembly that needs to be performed.
Specify action: 'Assemble'.
Also specify the number of assemblies to perform.
Click on: 'Save & Post'.

The system will give a warning when you don't have enough parts in stock.

Bundled Products

You can also use the assembly feature to create bundled products.
A trader in second video games can e.g. create a bundle of a game console and game.
The game consoles and games are purchased separately, but you need to "bundle" them
into a single product.

Example of a bundled product

In this example, we see a promotional bundle of a Nintendo Wii U and the game Mario Kart.
If we look at the tear down percentages, we see that the Wii U is het most valuable component
in this bundle.

Deconstruct Stock

You can also deconstruct assembled products.
The system automatically adds the decoupled components back to your inventory.
The tear down percentage is used when calculating the stock price of the
separate components.

You also use a work order to deconstruct a stock item.
Go to: 'Products > Work Order'

Select the assembly that needs to be deconstructed.
Select action: 'Tear Down'.

Deconstruct and reassemble stock

The tear down feature is also handy when you need to subdivide purchased goods.
Assume that you sell wine glasses.
You can only buy glasses in bulk at a wholesaler.
A box contains a 100 glasses, but you sell glasses in sets of 12 and 24.

How can you register this in the system?

We assume that the following products already exist in the system:
- Wine glass
- Purchase: 100 Wine Glasses
- 12 Wine Glasses

Step 1: Register Purchase Bundle

Go to: 'Products > Assembly' and click on 'New Record'.
Select final product: 'Purchase: 100 Wine Glasses'.

Specify part: 'Wine Glass'.
Specify quantity: 100.
The tear down percentage is: 100%.

Step 2: Register Sales Bundle

Go to: 'Products > Assembly' and click on 'New Record'.
Select final product: '12 Wine Glasses'.

Specify part: 'Wine Glass'.
Specify quantity: 12.
The tear down percentage is: 100%.

Step 3: Subdivide purchased goods

Go to: 'Products > Work order' and click on 'New Record'.

Select assembly: 'Purchase: 100 Wine Glasses'.
Specify action: 'Tear Down'.
Specify quantity: 1.

We're going to divide 1 box.
The box will be divided/converted into 100 wine glasses.
You can then use an assembly that merges 12 separate wine glasses into
into a single set.

Step 4: Assemble Sales Bundle

Go to 'Products > Work order' and click on 'New Record'.

Select assembly: '12 Wine Glasses'.
Specify quantity: 8.
Select action: 'Assemble'.

We have a 100 glasses, so we can create 8 sets of 12 glasses.
Your stock is now ready to be sold.
